You can see our route here on the map below. We visited Grandview on our second day of our New River Gorge Driving Tour. This trail is fairly flat with a couple side trails to overlook platforms. When the Castle Rock Trail ended, we took trail #5 back towards the Visitors Center to return to the parking lot. I loved the rock formations of this cliff.Īnd you even get a peek at the river below. The rhododendrons create a canopy in some places along the trail. I would say the only reason I was able to do this trail was because we took it slow and my husband held my hand the whole way =) At some points, the trail can be no more than a foot wide. The trail follows a ridge line with sheer drop offs on the other side. I will say that this trail is very difficult and not for children. I loved hiking this trail since it was rocky and provided a really neat experience. 6 miles, it is very strenuous and challenging. The other trail that we hiked was trail #4, the Castle Rock Trail. 5 mile trail that leads through the dense forest and even lets you climb through a cave-like tunnel. While we were visiting the park, the road to this overlook was closed so the only access to this overlook was via a 1.6 mile out and back trail. There is also another overlook, Turkey Spur. When you look to the left, you can just barely see the small coal town of Quinnimont at the bottom of the gorge where the first coal was shipped out in 1873. The main overlook offers a panoramic view of the “horseshoe” in the gorge below. It is located just 15 minutes from Interestate 64 near the town of Beckley.
